Why two cats are studying you

The story behind the study

For years Sir watched your species from a windowsill. He took notes. Then Cap arrived, and Cap had a different conclusion.

Sir’s conclusion was simple: humans are predictable, a little loud and not to be trusted with the last of anything. Cap believed, completely and on no evidence, that humans were invented for cats. That parcel lockers hold presents. That a warm dryer is a bed someone thoughtful left open. That a hand reaching down is always bringing something.

Sir could have ignored him. Instead he proposed a study. Two researchers, two hypotheses, one notebook. They would go out into the world, observe the Providers in their natural habitat and settle the question properly.

Nobody has settled anything. Sir & Cap is the record of that study: a deadpan animated short comedy, told in cases under thirty seconds long, on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram.

Every human behaviour has a cause, and the cause is usually snacks, a discount or the glowing rectangle. Observe long enough and nothing will surprise you. Sir has been observing for a very long time.

Deep down, everything they build is for us. They are just shy about saying so. Cap is prepared to be proven wrong many times, which is fortunate, because he usually is.

Every case tests both. Most weeks the evidence favours Sir. Some weeks it does not. Those are the weeks people remember.

Sir

Sir founded the study and keeps its only record, a small leather notebook nobody else has ever read. He has observed your species long enough to expect very little, and he is rarely disappointed. He speaks in complete sentences, never raises his voice and has never needed to.

He is not cruel. He is accurate. When Cap gets his hopes up, Sir takes them down gently, one fact at a time. And every so often something in him gives way: he drinks from the bowl, he keeps the paint chip, he winds the toy mouse twice. He will not discuss it.

Cap

Cap does the fieldwork and draws the conclusions. Every parcel locker, every bowl of water, every dryer door left open is, to him, evidence of a species that means well and has simply been waiting for the right two cats. He is wrong most weeks. He is never cynical.

Cap is sincere, not silly. His logic is wrong but emotionally airtight, and he means every word. When the world lets him down, his ears drop and he looks at the floor. Then he looks up again with a new theory. Next one is ours.

How a case works

Three beats, under thirty seconds

    Belief

    The researchers arrive somewhere everyone knows. Cap explains what the place is really for. Usually, he has concluded it was built for them.

    The world

    Something perfectly ordinary happens. A hand, a door, a machine. The Providers behave normally. Only the conclusion is absurd.

  3. 03

    The note

    Cap’s ears drop and he finds a hopeful line to hold on to, or Sir quietly does something kind. Either way, Sir writes one line in the notebook.

The small mercy

And yet.

Most weeks the world lets Cap down. It is never cruel, just ordinary: the locker opens for someone else, the warm laundry is taken out, the lift goes up without them. That is the deal, and it is why the other moments count.

Every so often the study pauses. Rain on the window, Cap asleep against a tweed shoulder, Sir keeping very still so as not to wake him. The notebook is open. There is no line written in it today, only a drawing. Sir will deny all of it.

Sir & Cap is made in Berlin by a one-person studio. Every case is written by hand, scene by scene and line by line, then animated with generative AI. Every video is labelled as AI-generated on every platform.

The show keeps a short list of rules. The cats judge what people do, never who people are. Humans stay in the background as a hand, a back or a blur. No real brands, no children, no cruelty. Cap can be disappointed. He is never hurt.
